हिन्दी अनुवाद- एक बूढ़ी औरत थी जिसे ‘काकी’ कहकर बुलाते थे। वह रेंगकर चलती थी क्योंकि उसके हाथ और पैर बहुत कमज़ोर थे। उसका पति बहुत समय पहले चल बसा था। वह अपने भजीते बुद्धिराम के साथ रहती थी। उसने अपनी सारी सम्पत्ति उसके नाम कर दी थी। रूपा बुद्धिराम की पत्नी थी। बुद्धिराम के दो बेटे और एक बेटी ‘लाडली’ थी।
लड़के कभी भी ‘काकी’ से अच्छा व्यवहार नहीं करते थे। वे उसे बहुत छेड़ा करते थे। काकी जब रोती-चिल्लाती थी तो उसकी कोई नहीं सुनता था। केवल लाडली ही थी जिसे ‘काकी’ से सहानुभूति थी। |
एक शाम, बुद्धिराम के दरवाजे पर शहनाई बज रही थी। वह उसके बड़े बेटे की सगाई का दिन था। समारोह चल रहा था। ‘कढ़ाई में ‘पूरियाँ’ तली जा रही थीं। ‘घी’ और मसालों की भीनी महक हवा में थी। ।
काकी अपने कमरे में बैठी थी और अन्दर अंधेरा था। वह खस्ता और गरमागरम पूरियों को सँघ सकती थी। पूरियों के चित्र उसकी आँखों के सामने तैर रहे थे। वह धीरे-धीरे चलने लगी और कढ़ाई के पास पहुँची। जब रूपा ने काकी को कढ़ाई के पास बैठे देखा, तो उसे गुस्सा आ गया। उसने काकी के दोनों हाथ झटक दिए और चिल्लाकर गालियाँ देने लगी। बूढ़ी काकी ने एक शब्द भी नहीं बोला। वह अपने कमरे में वापस आ गई। उसने अपने को अपमानित महसूस किया।

हिन्दी अनुवाद- रात का भोजन तैयार था। सभी मेहमानों ने खाना शुरू कर दिया था। काकी ने अपने कमरे में बैठे सोचा कि वह जब तक उसे बुलाया न जाए उसे नहीं जाना चाहिए।
खाने की लुभावनी महक उसे ललचा रही थी परन्तु उसे भोजन के लिए कोई बुलाने नहीं आया था। यह सोचकर कि वह मेहमान नहीं है जिसे बुलाने का इंतज़ार करना चाहिए, उसने बाहर जाने का निर्णय लिया। वह बरामदे तक रेंगती हुई पहुँची पर एक मेहमान ने उसे देखा और चिल्लाया, “कौन है ये बूढ़ी औरत? कहाँ से आई है ये? सावधान रहो, कहीं ये किसी को छू न ले।”
पंडित बुद्धिराम गुस्से में आ गया। उसने अपने हाथों से उसे पकड़ा और उसके कमरे तक घसीट लाया । यह देखकर लाडली को बहुत बुरा लगा। उसने सोचा, “तो क्या हुआ अगर काकी मेहमानों से पहले खा लेती। क्या वह सारी पूरियाँ खा डालती?”
रात के ग्यारह बजे थे। सभी सो रहे थे। लाडली ने अभी तक अपनी पूरियाँ नहीं खाई थीं। उसने पूरियाँ अपनी गुड़िया के डिब्बे में डालीं और काकी के कमरे में जाकर बोली, “उठो काकी, मैं तुम्हारे लिए पूरियाँ लाई हूँ।” काकी ने पूछा, “क्या इन्हें तुम्हारी माँ ने भेजा है?” लाली ने उत्तर दिया, “नहीं, ये मेरे हिस्से की हैं।” काकी ने सारी पूरियाँ खा ली परन्तु वह अभी भी भूखी थी। काकी ने लाडली से कहा, “बच्ची, अपनी माँ के पास जाओ और कुछ और पूरियाँ ले आओ।” लाडली ने उत्तर दिया, “अगर मैंने उन्हें जगाया तो वह गुस्सा हो जाएंगी।” काकी ने कहा, “मुझे उस जगह ले चलो जहाँ मेहमानों ने खाया था।”

हिन्दी अनुवाद- लाडली उसे ले गई और ‘पत्तलों के बीच बैठा दिया। काकी ने मेहमानों के द्वारा झूठा छोड़ा हुआ भोजन खाना शुरू किया। तभी रूपा जाग गई। उसने लाडली को अपने साथ नहीं पाया। वह बाहर बरामदे में गई और लाडली को ‘पत्तलों के पास खड़ा देखा। काकी बचा हुआ खाना उठाकर खा रही थी। रूपा अवाक हो गई। उसे काकी के बारे में जानकर दुख हुआ कि जिस घर में दावत के दिन जी भरकर मेहमानों ने खाया, उस दिन काकी भूखी रह गई। काकी ने ऐसा कुछ पूरियों के टुकड़ों के लिए किया । वह स्तब्ध रह गई। उसकी आँखें आँसूओं से भर गईं।
आधी रात हो चुकी थी। रूपा काकी के कमरे में खाना लेकर गई। आँसू भरी आँखों से उसने कहा, “उठो काकी । मैंने बहुत बड़ी भूल की है आपको खाना न परोसकर। कृपा करके मुझे माफ कर दो।” |
इन शब्दों को सुनकर काकी का दिल पिघल गया। उसने रूपा को माफ कर दिया और खाने लगी। काकी ने उसे भावपूर्ण ढंग से आशीर्वाद दिया।
