हिन्दी अनुवाद- बहुत समय पहले, इंग्लैण्ड में, एक औरत रहती थी जिनका नाम था फ्लोरेंस नाइटिन्गेल। नर्स के रूप में वह बहुत प्रसिद्ध हुईं। उन्होंने बीमार लोंगो की मदद के लिए बहुत कुछ किया ताकि वे बेहतर जो जाएं। | फ्लोरेंस एक अच्छे परिवार में पैदा हुईं। इटली के ‘फ्लोरेंस’ शहर, जहाँ से 12 मई 1820 को पैदा हुईं, से उनका यह नाम पड़ा। फ्लोरेंस इंग्लैण्ड में बड़ी हुईं। उनको उनके पिता ने घर पर ही पढ़ाया। उन्होंने अंग्रेज़ी, इटैलियन, लैटिन, जर्मन, और फ्रेंच भाषाएँ याद कीं और इतिहास और दर्शन शास्त्र की पढ़ाई की।
फ्लोरेंस अपनी बहन और माता-पिता के साथ बहुत से देशों में घूमी। उन्होंने अपने लिए कई टिप्पणियां भी लिखीं। एक दिन उन्होंने लिखा “आज ईश्वर ने मुझसे बात की, और मुझे अपनी सेवा के लिए बुलाया।” उन्होंने निश्चय किया कि वह जीवन में कुछ उपयोगी करेंगी।

हिन्दी अनुवाद- उन दिनों अच्छे घर की महिलाएं नर्स नहीं बनना चाहती थीं । नसों को बहुत कम पैसा दिया जाता था । उनको किसी से भी बहुत कम सम्मान मिला करता था।
उन दिनों के अस्पताल भी बेहतर न थे। साफ-सफाई पर बहुत कम ध्यान दिया जाता था। बिस्तरों की चादरें कभी नहीं बदली जाती थीं और मरीजों की स्वच्छता पर कोई भी ध्यान नहीं देता था।
फ्लोरेंस को इन चीज़ों का बुरा नहीं लगा। उन्होंने गुप्त रूप से नर्स बनने की योजना बनाई। उन्हें पहला अवसर तब मिला जब उनकी दादी बीमार पड़ गईं।
फ्लोरेंस उनके साथ रहीं और उनकी देखभाल की। धीरे-धीरे उन्होंने पास के एक गाँव के गरीब लोगों की मदद करनी शुरू की।
फ्लोरेंस ने जल्द ही महसूस किया कि वह अपना काम सही से नहीं कर पाती थीं क्योंकि वे प्रशिक्षित नहीं थीं। इसलिए उन्होंने दवाओं की किताबें पढ़नी शुरू कर दी। कुछ साल बाद उन्हें जर्मनी जाने का और एक अस्पताल में नर्सिंग सीखने का मौका मिला।

हिन्दी अनुवाद- जब वह इंग्लैण्ड वापस आयीं, वह लंदन के एक संगठन ‘केयर ऑफ द सिक’ की अधीक्षक बनीं। उन्होंने नस को प्रशिक्षण देना शुरू किया और बहुत प्रसिद्ध हो गईं।
1854 में क्रीमिया का युद्ध छिड़ गया। सरकार ने फ्लोरेंस नाइटिन्गेल को तुर्की में सेंतारी नामक स्थान पर भेज दिया। उन्हें चालीस नस के एक दल का प्रभारी बना दिया गया। सेंतारी का अस्पताल युद्ध में घायल हुए सैनिकों से भरा रहता था।
फ्लोरेंस ने अस्पताल की दशा सुधारने के लिए कड़ी मेहनत की। उन्होंने अस्पताल साफ किया और एक नई रसोई बनाई, जो बेहतर भोजन परोसती थी। अपने पैसों से वे नई चादरें और मरीजों के लिए कपड़े लाईं। वे कई घंटे उनके साथ बिताती थीं। उन्हें आराम और खुशी देने का वह हर संभव प्रयास करती थीं। रात को हाथ में लैम्प लिए वो बिस्तर से बिस्तर तक जाती थीं। इस प्रकार से ही उनका नाम ‘द लेडी विद द लैम्प’ पड़ा।
फ्लोरेंस ने इतना कठिन परिश्रम किया कि वे बहुत बीमार पड़ गईं। परन्तु इग्लैण्ड वापस जाने के लिए उन्होंने इन्कार कर दिया। 1860 में उन्होंने नसों का नाइटिन्गेल विद्यालय शुरू किया। उनके प्रयासों से, नसों को सारे देश में सम्मान मिला। फ्लोरेंस नाइटिन्गेल की मृत्यु 13 अगस्त, 1910 में लंदन में हुई। वे नर्सिंग के क्षेत्र में बहुत से महत्वपूर्ण बदलाव ले कर आईं।
