हिन्दी अनुवाद – सिद्धार्थ का जन्म कपिलवस्तु में हुआ। उसके पिता राजा शुद्धोधन थे और माँ रानी महामाया थीं। वह एक बहुत सुंदर महल में रहता था परन्तु वह वहाँ प्रसन्न नहीं था। वह प्रतिदिन बगीचे में जाता और वहाँ घंटों बैठा करता था। वह वहाँ सुंदर पेड़ों, फूलों, पक्षियों और तितलियों को देखता और पक्षियों के गानों का आनन्द लेता। सोलह वर्ष की आयु में उसने अपनी शिक्षा पूरी की और राजकुमारी यशोधरा से विवाह किया। वह पक्षियों, कीड़े मकोड़ों, जानवरों और मनुष्यों के साथ बहुत दयालु था और इन सभी से प्यार करता था। देवदत्त सिद्धार्थ का चचेरा भाई था। परन्तु वह बहुत घमंड़ी और क्रूर था। वह पक्षियों और जानवरों के प्रति दयालु नहीं था।
एक दिन सिद्धार्थ अपने चचेरे भाई देवदत्त के साथ बगीचे में घूम रहा था। देवदत्त अपने साथ कमान और तीर लाया था। अचानक, देवदत्त ने एक उड़ता हंस देखा और उसपर तीर चला दिया। उसके तीर से हंस नीचे की तरफ आया और ज़मीन पर आ गिरा। सिद्धार्थ ने उसे उठाया और अपनी गोद में रख लिया। उसने तीर खींच कर निकाला और घाव को धोकर साफ किया। उसने उसे पीने को पानी दिया।

हिन्दी अनुवाद – देवदत्त तीर और कमान के साथ सिद्धार्थ के पास आया। उसने हंस को सिद्धार्थ की गोद में देखा।
देवदत्त : यह हंस मुझे दो। मैंने इस पर निशाना लगाया है। यह हंस मेरा है।
सिद्धार्थ : छी-छीः! तुमने इस सुन्दर पक्षी पर निशाना लगाया! तुम सच में बहुत निर्दयी हो। भाई, दयालु बनो।
देवदत्त : नहीं, मैं निर्दयी नहीं हूँ। मैं बहादुर हूँ। मेरा हंस मुझे दो।
सिद्धार्थ : मैं यह पक्षी तुम्हें नहीं दूंगा। मैंने इसे बचाया है। यह मेरा हंस है।
देवदत्त : मैं राजा के पास जा रहा हूँ। वे ही निर्णय करेंगे। (सिद्धार्थ भी राजा के पास गया। राजा ने उन दोनों की बात को सुना और अपना फैसला सुनाया )
राजा : देवदत्त, तुमने पक्षी पर निशाना लगाया इसलिए यह पक्षी तुम्हारा नहीं है। सिद्धार्थ ने पक्षी को बचाया इसलिए यह इसका पक्षी है।
